Most of the time, when you hear someone mention they are attending a “community college”, you immediately imagine a small campus end to home that only offers two-year degrees. Nowadays, that’s not necessarily the case. Large universities are branching out into communities offering other options for students looking to stay close to home. Thankfully in Livingston County, Michigan, there are more options than one may think.
Cleary University. This university has locations in Ann Arbor, and Howell, Michigan. Cleary focuses mainly on business programs, offering degrees such as BBA Business Management to even MBA Green Business Strategy. The Howell location is minutes from historic downtown Howell which boasts great restaurants and shops, making it easy to grab a bite to eat or do some light shopping in between classes. Probably one of the best things about Cleary University is that they offer a “tuition guarantee”. Basically, this guarantee allows you to succor college without having to worry about increases in tuition. As long as you stay enrolled in classes, your tuition rate will pause unchanged. For those considering enrolling in 2009/2010, tuition cost per credit hour for undergraduates is $325. For someone enrolling in their graduate program, they can inquire of to pay $495 per credit hour. These costs include all required textbooks, and almost every imaginable fee other colleges usually charge you for. If these costs seem a little out of reach for you, don’t worry- according to Cleary’s website, every year they disburse over 5 million dollars in financial assistance to their students in various forms.
Lansing Community College. Lansing Community College has a Learning Center located in Howell at the Parker Campus off of Michigan Avenue/D-19. They offer a wide range of programs that meet almost everyone’s needs. Tuition costs are per billing hour, rather than credit hour, and inaugurate at $73.00 per billing hour. The cost is also dependent upon whether or not you are a resident of one of fifteen school districts, a resident of a district other than those specified and even has pricing for out-of-state and international students. Because it is a public community college, it offers a lot of sources for financial aid. Everything from your basic educational loan, to grants and even work study programs are available. Unlike most branches of community colleges where you may have to drive to the main campus for some of your educational needs, the Howell location offers academic advising, assessment testing and test proctoring onsite.
Howell College of Cosmetology. For someone looking to get into the cosmetology industry, the Howell College of Cosmetology is a great choice. The Howell College of Cosmetology is located in a rural area on the east side of Howell, not far off of Substantial River. This private college operates on a continuous calendar system, and has small class sizes allowing attendees to get great one-on-one training. Tuition is competitive and private loans can be acquired through outside sources allowing those in need of financial aid to obtain the funds to complete their program of choice. If you’re looking to specialize in a specific area, this is a great region to get started.
Eastern Michigan University. Usually, EMU wouldn’t be thought of as a university that is within the community of Livingston County. With its main campus being located in Ypsilanti, Michigan, someone considering continuing their education only within a close distance to their home may not consider it an option. But, Eastern Michigan University has several off campus sites, like the one located in Brighton, Michigan. Although this location only offers an undergraduate program in nursing, it does offer a few graduate programs, as well as a couple certification/endorsement programs. The tuition and fees are based on residency and course level. Like many large universities there are also numerous fees that are required in addition to tuition costs, such as lab and technology fees.
Of course, if you’re willing to commute, there are so many other options close to Livingston County. Whether you’re looking for a great top ten university or a private college with a quiet campus, there is definitely something for everyone!
