Anyone interested in becoming a certified nursing assistant in the State of Florida needs to apply for a certified nursing assistant training program through the Florida Board of Nursing. Applicants have to submit information about their college or training center to ensure that the program complies with Florida laws and the rules of the Board of Nursing. Enrolling in an Approved Certified Nursing Assistant Program
The Florida Board of Nursing maintains a list of approved CNA training programs in Florida. The updated list can be found online here. You’ll secure dozens of schools and training centers scattered throughout the state, and many are located in Jacksonville, Orlando, Saint Augustine, Miami and Daytona Beach.
Certified Nursing Assistant programs in Florida run between eight weeks to six months in length depending on the school. Most programs have a classroom component that prepares students for the written piece of the state Medical Board Exam, as well as a clinical or lab component that gives students a chance to learn basic life saving skills, emergency room preparation techniques and hygiene principles.
The Florida Certified Nursing Assistant exam consists of a written portion and a practical skills portion. The written part consists of 75 questions with a weighted point value, and students have a minimum score of 80% in order to pass. The practical skills portion consists of five job-related tasks.
Applying for a Certified Nursing Assistant License in Florida
The Florida Department of Health now offers an online licensing option, but Florida CNAs can also submit their information directly to the Department of Health’s CAN Registry based in Tallahassee. Florida CAN licenses expire on December 31of each odd year, and all CNAs are required to accumulate 24 in-service hours for a period of four years. CNAs can renew their license via FLHealthSource.com or by mail.
Refresher Courses for Certified Nursing Assistants in Florida
Only a handful of community colleges and healthcare organizations in the State of Florida offer certified nursing assistant refresher courses. The Bert Rogers Schools offer refresher courses online, but the clinical requirements must be completed elsewhere. Schools and organizations offering refresher courses include:

- Seminole Community College
- Capscare Academy for Health Care Education, Inc.
Some nursing schools in the major cities, including Orlando, Miami and Tampa also offer refresher courses at various intervals of the year.
