An online degree in nursing sounds impossible. How can the hands on knowledge that nursing requires be learned online? The truth is that all schools offering a degree in nursing require that a student be a currently licensed RN. The degrees are offered to those nurses who want to advance or expand career options. Some of the schools require brief on campus stays and some require fieldwork or internships to be done where the student lives.
Some schools are old pros at online learning while others, especially the used campus based schools, are quite new at it. Prospective students should try to get a sample of the online experience since they can range from bare text copies of lectures to rich, interactive content.
There are many schools that offer nursing programs. The following were chosen because they all have at least regional accreditation.
University of Phoenix
The University of Phoenix is the behemoth of online schools. It is the largest university in the United States online or off line. It offers several degree programs in nursing. All but one program are totally online. The nursing program is nationally accredited and students are eligible for federal loans and grants.
Students are required to be licensed RNs.
RN to BS in nursing
The student must be a licensed RN. This program gives the student a general liberal arts education plus additional education in nursing.
MSN/MBA/HCM
This program is a blend of nursing and business management skills. The student will get a functional knowledge of finance, accounting, and management plus very practical report writing, oral reporting and group process skills.
The student must complete an applied management science project that
Relates to his interests or responsibilities.
The student must be a licensed RN, have a bachelors degree, and have three or more years working in health care.
Doctor of Health Administration (DHA)
A person holding this degree would obtain work at the higher levels of health care administration and management. A short residency at the Phoenix campus is required: 8 days for the first year, 3 days the second year, and 4 days for the third year.
Kaplan
Kaplan offers a BS in nursing. Lab and clinical work are required and must be done in the state where the student is licensed. Kaplan’s nursing program is not now nationally accredited, but they are seeking accreditation in Nov. of 2005.
Walden
Walden offers a number of Masters degrees. Students must be RNs with a BSB, an AND, or a Diploma.

Offers an RN to BSN
No campus attendance is required. They claim to be the only online school offering streaming video and video lectures online. CDs are provided of all lectures so that the student may study off line.
The school is fully accredited and students are eligible for federal loans.
National American University
RN to BSN
Study is focused using work cohorts online. Students are required to have an RN, an Associate degree in nursing, or a Diploma in nursing with a GPA of at least 2.5.
Federal loans are available.
University of Cincinnati
RN to BSN
MSN Nurse Midwifery
Online plus clinical rotations in your local community with a preceptor Graduates are eligible for certification by the American College of Nurse-Midwives Certification Commission. An RN or BSN is required.
MS Women’s Health Nurse
This is online but local clinical rotations are required. Students are eligible for national certification.
Federal loans are available to students.
Indiana Westleyan University
RN to BS
Students receive assistance with online programs before they start the first class. Federal loans are available.
Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences
RN to BS with a concentration in nursing
Requires a GPA of 2.5 with no grade below a C.
Saint Joesph’s College
RN to BSN
All online except for 2 weeks during the summer that the student must use on campus.
Students are eligible for federal loans.
University of Delaware
BRN or Baccalaureate for the RN
MSN Health Services Administration
The student will acquire skills and knowledge necessary to be in management in health services.
Some programs require an on campus end from one day to one week.
University of Mass Boston Online
BS in Nursing
Students must wait on an orientation prior to the beginning of classes and then attend for four hours during the Health Assessment and Promotion course. Out of region students may make arrangements to complete these requirements at a distance.
MS in Nursing/Master of Public Health dual degree
This degree requires several clinical internships: one each in a rural and urban setting; on working with a “Healthy People 2010″ priority issue; at least one with low-income or underserved populations; and one policy internship in a status or federal legislative office.
The MS requires a Bachelor’s degree.
Students are eligible for federal loans.

Whether you are a senior considering what to do after graduation or an adult looking to enter a new career path, the decision to become a nurse is big. Not only do nurses have to be able to think on their feet, but not everyone is cut out to be a caregiver. This is probably why nursing has evolved as profession that attracts far more women than men. As a group, women seem to be grand more able to give care than most men.
Having decided to be a nurse, the next big hurdle is finding a nursing school. Your choices at this point are many. The first one is choosing whether to be a practical or registered nurse. While these are not mutually exclusive because many practical nurses go on to become a registered nurse, most do not. Typically, a practical nursing program runs from 10 to 12 months. To become an RN, you will have to go to school a minimum of 2 years perhaps as much as 5 or 6 to specialize.
For graduating seniors from high school, the option to become an RN with a bachelor of science degree in nursing can be a respectable one for the better students. Since there is a marvelous chance that you are planning for a 4 year degree, you might as well start out in that direction for your nursing degree. When looking for a good 4 year school, many of the same decisions for college need to be reached that any other college bound student will compose.
The first choice is to settle whether you will go to a school close to home or a residential college several hours or several states away. In this instance, the really important understanding is to evaluate your self control. If you are a party animal that can be easily distracted from your studies and goals, you will want to hover near home for your education. This will allow your parents to aid you through the temptations not to work. If you are fairly mature, going away to college is a superb idea.
For adults returning to advance their career and educational goals, the best choice of school is usually the one the meets your requirements that is an easy commute from where you currently live and work or have support. If adults have to commute too far for classes, they will usually not complete their education. The extra time and expense of the commute will originate to weigh on them, and they will decide to abandon their goal.
Either way, from here the decision making processes run on the same track. Many of the private career schools offer tracks for licensed and registered nurses. The two things to look for with the career schools is cost and certification rates. It is common for private career schools to charge more than double the price of community colleges and residence universities. The private schools’ standards for admission are often lower because of their need to fill up classrooms to be able to turn a profit.
Because of lower admission standards, attrition from low grades can run high. To offset the fail rate, classroom standards may be reduced to make the completion ratio look better. These lower grading and admission standards often result in a lesser percent of students passing the station boards at the end of the program.
The real problem is that most students never know if they are doing well in their studies because everyone looks like they are related to Einstein. This can result in major disappointment at the completion of the program. The only solution is to do really look closely at how graduates do on the state tests. Schools are required to have this information available to prospective students. Not all private schools are bad, but it is a case of let the buyer beware.
For one or two year programs, most community colleges are running very successful programs. It is detached important for you to check out the completion rates and the state board results from these schools as well. Often community colleges will present much of this information up front to attract students. The cost at these schools is generally within the boundaries of Pell grants plus modest student loan debt.
If you are considering a practical nursing program with the idea of continuing on to an RN program or a two-year RN program and going on for a BSN, take the time to investigate each step. Make sure that the practical nursing program credits will bridge into the RN program. If you are planning to go on for the 4 year degree, you will need an RN program that awards an associates degree at the program end. Nearly all 4 year programs will accept an associates degree without losing college hours.
Finally, the best bet when looking for a nursing school is collect some nurses who are alumni of the program. After talking with 5 or 6 of them, you should be able to have a reliable idea about the difficulty of the school plus how the students did after graduation. Some schools will show a high licensing rate, but it may require students to retake the status tests numerous times. The school will only show the final result. You need a school that gives you a reasonable assurance becoming a nurse at the other end of your educational efforts.
